Initiatives and projects for automated invoice processing

Kreuzlingen, June 2010 More and more companies are changing over to automated, electronic invoicing processes. In comparison to paper-based methods, electronic processes offer huge savings potentials within the Financial Supply Chain. The European Commission, for instance, is expecting to save billions a result of its E-Invoicing, eID, eSignatures and eProcurement projects.

E-Invoicing initiatives on an European level

The High Level Group on Reducing Bureaucracy, led by former Bavarian Minister President Dr. Edmund Stoiber, has concluded that electronic invoicing is especially important for reducing bureaucracy. In its closing report at the end of 2009, the European Commission Expert Group on E-Invoicing put forward a number of recommendations for developing the use of E-Invoicing even further throughout Europe. These recommendations are currently being implemented at all levels, and many countries have already initiated specific projects. For example, the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology has instructed the Working Group for Economic Administration (AWV) to form a national forum for electronic invoicing. The objective of this forum is to promote the acceptance and use of electronic invoicing, and to effectively reduce bureaucracy for small- and medium-sized enterprises by means of practical solutions. As a further consequence of the recommendations made by the panel of experts, the European laws on electronic invoicing are being adapted (from 2013, electronic invoicing will be treated the same as paper-based invoicing) and cross-industry standards are being promoted.

Innovations from the private sector

E-Invoicing projects in the public sector play an important role in the development of the market. Ultimately, however, it is the private sector that is introducing innovative solutions for the user. There is currently a wide range of services on offer to companies of all sizes. Increasingly, providers of electronic invoicing services are linking their platforms, and users are profiting from this interoperability.
