Fortis nominates Filip Dierckx as new CEO

Today, the Fortis Board of Directors has decided unanimously to nominate Filip Dierckx as the new CEO of Fortis, succeeding Herman Verwilst. He will formally be appointed CEO after approval by a general shareholder meeting to be announced in due course. As of today and up until this time, Filip has been granted full CEO authority. "Given his vast experience and knowledge of the company, we're happy that Filip has accepted this challenging task," explains Maurice Lippens, Chairman of the Fortis Board of Directors. "The Board fully supports Filip and the Executive team to implement the capital plan, integrate ABN AMRO and restore trust and confidence in the company." Filip Dierckx (52) is member of the Fortis Executive Committee and Chairman of the Fortis Bank Executive Board since 1st January 2008. He has a wide experience in both international and domestic banking and is, in the opinion of the board and based on an internal and external executive search, the best person to lead Fortis through the challenging times facing the entire financial industry. The board wishes to thank Herman Verwilst, for having led Fortis through this difficult transition period. Filip Dierckx - 52 years old

Chairman Fortis Bank Filip Dierckx has a Master of Law Degree from Harvard Law School (1980) and graduated with a Master's Degree in Law from the University of Antwerp (1978). He also gained a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the KUL.Filip Dierckx began his career as a lawyer at well-known Brussels legal firm De Bandt, van Hecke & Lagae. He joined Generale Bank in 1983 as International Legal Counsel and as General Manager quickly became involved in general administration (Planning and Control, Accounting, Economic studies, Fiscal Affairs, 'ALM' Department etc.). In this capacity he was project manager during the takeover of Crà©dit Lyonnais Bank Nederland. In 1997 and 1998 he was Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors of Belgolaise Bank. Since 1998 he has been Managing Director at Fortis Bank. In that capacity he was responsible for Retail Banking, Investment Banking & Financial Markets.  In 2000, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of Fortis and became CEO of Fortis Merchant Banking, Fortis wholesale bank. On January 1 2008, he became Chairman of Fortis Bank. Filip Dierckx is Member of the Board of Directors in different companies of the Group SD VEV (Vlaams Economisch Verbond) and also a Member of the Board of Voka - Vlaams Economisch Verbond.
